Albert Bridge Loop (Medium)

6.5 km·intermediate·medium route·Loop

Upstream past Battersea Bridge to Albert Bridge. Cross to the south bank at Albert Bridge and return along the Battersea Park embankment. Passes the Chelsea Harbour entrance — watch for marina traffic. A satisfying paddle with good views.

Tidal strategy: Best paddled on the flood tide (upstream, towards the turn point), turning at high water slack, then riding the ebb back.

Hazards on This Route

Chelsea Harbour Marina EntranceAVOID

Active marina entrance. Motor vessels entering/exiting. Give wide berth and pass on the downstream side.

Battersea Railway Bridge PiersCAUTION

Strong eddies form around bridge piers on ebb tide. Pass through the centre arch. Avoid hugging piers.

Battersea Bridge PiersCAUTION

Five-arch bridge with narrow spans. Pass through centre arch. Current accelerates through the arches.

Albert Bridge PiersCAUTION

Suspension bridge — wider spans than Battersea. Still pass centrally. Watch for pleasure boats moored nearby.

Chelsea Embankment OutfallCAUTION

Storm drain outfall on north bank. May discharge after heavy rain. Avoid close approach. You may see discoloured water.

Cremorne Wharf MooringsCAUTION

Houseboats and barges moored along north bank. Give clearance — mooring chains extend underwater. Do not paddle between moored vessels and the wall.
